Joanna Lee is a freelance composer, arranger/transcriber, teacher and accompanist. Her compositions have been
performed by a variety of professional musicians including Sarah Leonard, Jane’s Minstrels, Noszferatu, BCMG
and The Elysian Quartet, and have included such venues as the BMIC’s The Warehouse (Cutting Edge Series),
The Spitz and Shoreditch Church (Winter Spitalfields Festival). Please see ‘Performances’ page for full details.

Joanna specialises in vocal composition, with her vocal works often been noted for their ‘inventive’ use of the voice
and her penchant for extended techniques. These vocal works have been used in workshops, masterclasses and
conferences held by Jane Manning OBE and Sarah Leonard, and have received mentions in the magazines
‘The Singer’ and ‘Singing’ (Association of Teachers of Singing).

In 2002, Joanna was placed on the ‘spnm’ shortlist through her composition your little voice, which is now held at
the BMIC library. She has received many performances and commissions through spnm, the most recent being a
commission to write a set of miniatures to be performed by The Elysian Quartet at The Spitz, and a 6-month project
composing a piece for Jane’s Minstrels as part of Jane Manning’s Fellowship at Kingston University researching
into Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire.

Joanna’s musical interests began with piano lessons at the age of five. By the time she was eighteen, she had
achieved a Performance Diploma and Advanced Certificate on the piano, Grade 8 Distinction in piano, singing and
music theory, and Grade 7 Distinction on the violin. She also received a number of awards for her composition
work, including a second place prize awarded by HM Queen Elizabeth II in a nationwide competition to compose
a piece for the launch of the Goss Challenge boat.

Joanna Subsequently went on to study for a BMus(Hons) degree specialising in composition at Birmingham
Conservatoire under the tuition of Joe Cutler, where upon graduation she received the Composition Prize and was
awarded a place at The Royal Academy of Music. Whilst at the Conservatoire, she continued with her piano and
singing tuition, and worked as an accompanist. In the autumn of 2002, Joanna spent a semester studying at The
Norwegian State Academy of Music in Oslo as part of the ERASMUS exchange.

At present, Joanna is combining working as a composer, arranger/transcriber, teacher and accompanist whilst
studying for an MPhil/PhD in composition, concentrating on vocal composition, under the tuition of Edwin Roxburgh
and Sarah Leonard.
